Cloverdale CA, Lake Sonoma

Enjoyed a few hours of hiking around lovely Lake Sonoma yesterday.  It was a bit warm!  I always think that northern CA is cooler but, of course that is not the case unless you are on the ocean or higher altitude and Lake Sonoma is probably around the 500 ft elevation.

We hiked in a forest and the madrones make up quite a bit of this forest.  Everyone knows this area of the country is known for the sequoias or redwoods but the madrone is a Pacific coast tree and quite beautiful.  It has a bark that peels and turns orange red looking similar to the manzanita in smoothness and color.  It was also a good day for butterflies as you can see!
