Ajo AZ, Cabeza Prieta Petroglyphs

Fortunately Mike and I asked about any petroglyphs in the area when we checked in at the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge office in Ajo because what you see below are just a few of the petroglyphs we saw at the end of a small hike out on the refuge.  It is amazing!  Thousands of black lava rocks scattered along a small sloping ravine near a well are covered in the carvings. I've never seen anything like it and believe we could have spent days making sure we checked out every rock in the area that had a petroglyph on it!

We were told there was an article written by a couple who decided to take pictures of each carving and were still not sure they had captured them all at 5000 pictures!

looking over stones with petroglyphs towards the well marked with a blue flag. Every picture hereafter has petroglyphs, some have several in the same pic.  See if you can find them all!

  1. Very cool! If you ever get up to Laughlin, NV area, there is a place called Grapevine Canyon about 6 miles outside of town that is LOADED with petroglyphs.
