About 20 miles north of us here in Elephant Butte lie the excavated remains of Ft. Craig. Built in the mid 1800s to protect pioneers from the Apaches and other warring tribes, it was modified and more heavily fortified when it was thought the Civil War might come to the fort. In fact, the Battle of Valverde, a Civil War battle, took place not too far away on the other/east side of the Rio Grande. We do not think of the Civil War as have take place this far west! Very interesting....
