Wow, Thousands of Sandhills!!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time!  We are so fortunate!  Mike and I drove to check out the La Playa Wildlife Refuge near here.  We knew the sandhill cranes roosted there but really did not expect to see many as it was the middle of the day.

As we were walking out to the playa, we ran into another couple walking back who said they had just seen a few cranes but not what one would expect if it were early morning or evening.  As we stood there talking cranes started flying in from the south overhead by the droves, flight after flight after flight.  It was amazing to see!!  They started gathering in the air over the playa and then began to land.  This flying in and landing lasted about 40 minutes.  Never seen anything like it! Thousands of these beautiful birds flying in and landing not far from us!

We did not have a great view of all the cranes after landing due to the sand dunes in between us and them.  But here are a few pics of what I could get:

After the crane experience we felt we needed to taste wine....

so we drove over to Pillbury Wine Co. for a tasting!

Bonnie was very nice and so was the wine!
