Lake Itasca State Park, MN

Lake Itasca State Park is known for including, within its boundaries, the headwaters of the Mississippi River.  They also have several miles of trails so we thought we would give it a go.
On the way we saw.......
this Red Tail Hawk...........

is enjoying a colorful frog for lunch
...and these two horses peeking out of an old barn.

a solitary Loon on Lake Itasca.  the Loon is the state bird
I could see this field of wild iris as we walked on a trail by the lake but could not access it....

Lake Itasca
We hiked part of the Brower Trail...see that small opening into the dense, wet forest????  You can hear the buzzing of the mosquitoes already right???

I stopped a few times to take pics but, believe me, I took them quick and did not take anywhere as near as many as I would have had we not been surrounded by clouds of mosquitoes!!!

Later we drove past several smaller lakes with beaver lodges but did not see a beaver anywhere.

can you tell where the water starts??
